ANCIENT COLLECTION

In the last few centuries of the old era the eastern Adriatic coast meets the influence of antique Mediterranean civilization. The establishing of Greek colonies of Issa and Pharos, and growing influence of Roman Republic for this area, wars with Delmats who inhabited middle Dalmatian inland and represented the main obstacle to final Roman conquering, all this was of great influence to this area. That, it seems, becomes a defense bridge of some kind to Roman conquering of Illyrians. Thus, it was not a coincidence that exactly here the main town of the province was established – Salona. The middle position of Salona in the scope of Roman province of Dalmatia with its belonging field, whose part was todays Kaštela too, provides extraordinary prerequisites for development. There is a Siculi in Resnik – the most important antique site in Kaštela, which peaks in the last centuries before Christ. By reinforcing of Roman power the long period of peace commenced and during this period the whole area of Salona’s field was organized into the system of economic-vacation objects – rustic villas. The area of kaštela was extremely populated.

The Museum’s Antique collection contains objects from many sites. The majority of objects from permanent display come from Resnik where intensive archeological research is being conducted. One smaller part of permanent display are the objects from Roman graveyard in Donje Krtine in Kaštel Sućurac and from the Roman rustic villa positioned by the Old Olive Tree in Kaštel Štafilić.
