2. Hellenistic relief glass

Site: Resnik, docking area
Material: ceramics
Dating: 2nd – 1st century BC
Dimensions: height 7, 3 cm and width 12 cm
Description: Black half-sphere dish ornamented in relief, of straight brim, with shallow round little leg. The ornament is divided into two horizontal fields. The first field holds the meander motif. The second field is ornamented by stylized acanthus leaves alternating in 6 lines creating a floral calyx.

This dish belongs to a ceramic group called Hellenistic relief ceramics. It was developed in Athens in the middle of the 3rd century BC. They were made in one-piece casts. After making and drying they were taken out of the casts and coated in fine melted clay which gave them a color (grey or red). Motif can be herbal, bestial or figural. During Roman period, an Aretine relief ceramics becomes from this type of ceramics (1st century AD) it is more famous as terra sigillata.
